Spec Ops: The Line
Fantastic and refreshing gameplay
I have to say I feel like the first person shooter just got a refereshing makover. In the past to me the first person shooter was like a mission dealing chore, forcing you to acheive an objective without getting killed. No longer, this game started with only one mission, to find the source of a distress call from the 33rd, and then evolved into survival and later into vengence. The game felt continuous, unbroken. Unlike battlefield3 or call of duty where you feel like your just a small part of a bigger mission basically dealing with a handfull of mini missions. This game makes you fell like your really interfering with everything, that all your actions are making a HUGE difference in the lives of everyone in Dubai. Since this game is based on the book "Heart of Darkness" it is bound to be very dark, which it acheives and is highlighted by the music and the horror of war. Oh and while I'm on the subject of music, I bought the soundtrack because it's Bad@$$.
I have to admit the first 5 chapters were somewhat hodrum and went by really fast, same old first person shooter stuff, but everything started branching away in chapter6, then completely changed in chapter 7. There are intel items to pick up in every chapter that are not necessary to collect, but they tell more of the back story. I ignored them in the first 5 chapters but I had to get them in the rest because they really added alot to the story. There are a couple of decision points along the way that will alter the outcome of some situations, I will be experimenting with them when I play through again.
The reviews (IGN) said it was 6 hours of gameplay, but it took me 11 hours because I died alot and I wanted to play more when I finished. As with all games lately, the manual is very small and very difficult to read. All weapons have a second firing mode. Would I play it again, YES. I can't say the same for Ghost Recon future soldier which I also felt was a great game, but this surpassed that. It felt far more personal and I became emotionally attached to it, my companions, and to the people of Dubai.
